Interview

Brazilian-Spanish opera singer – lyric tenor Caio Duran

By Azad Karimi

How important are children to us?

"We" mean society and family. The family means the parents and the guardian or legal guardian ... and the society means the legal guardians of the people, that is, the three forces, and the legal defenders of the people, that is, non-governmental organizations and institutions.

With the cultural growth of society, the level of expectations of people to enjoy individual freedoms and social welfare increases.

In a democratic society where people have the power to express themselves and there is no individual tyranny, all members of society and their rights and the extent to which they enjoy legal rights are defined and institutions are created to implement them and to protect and inspect how they are implemented.

Children form an important and fundamental part of a growing and dynamic society, so protecting their physical and mental health, well-being and upbringing require a well-planned, coherent, advanced, and progressive system.

In Norway, the country where I live, the government, together with the children's parents, is in charge of the children ... so the government can have direct control over how the child grows.

The reason for this kind of legal and regulatory intervention by the Norwegian government in this regard is the raising healthy, dynamic, and efficient generations to preserve the country.

I read a news item from Tehran, the capital of Iran, which shocked me since yesterday: Iranian director Babak Khorramdin was killed at the age of forty-seven by his eighty-year-old parents ... This news has shocked Iran ... and, the media is talking about light punishment for his father because in the criminal law of Iran, which is based on Islamic law, a man's father and grandfather, and paternal grandfather can kill a human being and be exempt from punishment. This story happened about a gay boy in Ahvaz and a teenage girl in northern Iran in recent months ... ... Unfortunately, Iranian law does not allow a voice of protest against this law to lead to a change in this law.

Unfortunately, some Islamic laws in societies like Iran open the door to crime.

If the family is not a safe environment for the child, how can one expect the community environment to be a safe and secure place for the child ... Lack of protective laws causes problems and catastrophes like the ones that happen even in adult age.

I read in Caio's interview that he cares about children's cultural education. So I used this as an excuse to mention these painful issues in Iran. I hope that hearing and reading this scary and unpleasant news will be a wake-up call for communities to act more quickly to create protective laws for children and adolescents.

I wish good luck to my dear friend Caio.

Thank you!

1- Please present yourself: (Name, education, Civil status and...)

.My name is Caio Duran, I’m married, I’m Brazilian now living in Spain. Studied at Carlos Gomes College (Bachelor in Eruditechant). In 2012, I graduated from “Civica Scuoladi Musica Claudio Abbado” in scenicinter pretationandchant, and in 2016 from Opera Studio ofthe "Theatro Municipal de São Paulo". Now I’m studying for a Master's degree in Artistic Operatic Interpretation of the “Conservatorio Superior de Musica Joaquín Rodrigo”.

2-What is your artistic specialize?

I’m an opera singer – lyric tenor.

3- When and how did you become interested in this field of art?

.I remember that since childhood, I really liked music. Nobody in my family was a musician. At 9 years old I started listening to tenor CDs and imitating. I asked my parents to study singing and started. At this time, I sang on some television shows and festivals. At 16, I met Brazilian tenor Benito Maresca and he introduced me to the world of opera. From there, I decided that I wanted to be an opera singer.

4- Who was your motivator?

. In the beginning, I always had family support which was very important. With maturity, I was fortunate to be surrounded by good people (teachers who become friends, co-workers) whole me in a good way.

5- What was your parent’s reaction?

.I think it was a well-received idea that I would like to become a singer.

  1. When did you start working as a professional artist – musician and opera singer?

.I think it was at10 years old on a TV show, in Brazil. Then, I started to sing at weddings (since then, sang more than 1000 weddings) and Italian parties.

7- Are you thankful and happy because of your activities as a musician and opera singer?

. I was happy until the beginning of the pandemic, with a promising 2020 and 2021, with several jobs scheduled. Of course, every time I leave the stages at is fied and feel that my work touches people, I am grateful for the opportunity to provide good feelings and emotion.

8- What is Opera culture? What is Opera logic?

.I think it’s going to the theater watching a well-executed musical play that was composed between the 16th and 21st centuries. That simple! Over time, the viewer who develops a critical sense for the genre seeks to frequent operas of composers directors he likes, for example, or to follow a singer who became an idol.

9- Why does some Opera performing become immortal?

.Because it is something unique. Sometimes everything fits perfectly, the singers are in line with the directors and the proposal of the show, which make that performance immortal for the audience.

10- How you see the Music, Singing, Opera, art and culture in your perspective?

I mean your prediction for the future of music!

.I see a lot of talented people, a lot of human potentials, excellent singers, great actors, many virtuous instrumentalists, wonderful directors.

However, the number of spaces where the see people can work (theaters and concert hall)are decreasing, in my view, instead of increasing! I think there is a lack of good management and a view that art is fundamental to life (the pandemic made that very clear). A lot of people like opera and don't even know it!

11- Can you become one part of the cultural movement for motivation in youth or new generation in your country and so than?

.I think it is essential that children have access to classical music. With this access, many children arouse interest in studying an instrument, singing, or learning more about the role of a conductor, for example. We can not take off this access to music, theater, etc. The arts, in general, awaken something important for a society, which needs to be presented in early childhood. Many children in my country have never seen a concert, never seen a live instrument, some time seven their teachers have never had this access and this is very sad. I have already participated and produced some projects and sang at some public schools and it was a wonderful experience because I know that every child who was there will remember that forever, and that thrills me. I intend to continue with projects like this whenever I can.

12- How can you help our world become a better place to live?

. A singer is like an athlete, we are always looking to improve ourselves with the material we have. If I want to continue doing my job in order to take it to the public, I need to stay very active. If each person works with love as well as I do, the world will be a better place to live. If I can give advice to whoever is reading this, be happy working with what you love. I think the idea of putting into practice some project to make music accessible and awaken the musical taste in children, which are the future, is wonderful.
