Interview

French Cartoonist Marc Chalvin

By: Azad Karimi

Today is the day of the national flag of Kurdistan. The Kurds have had flags throughout their millennial history from the flag of the Mittani kingdom with the peacock and the rooster shape(Mall u Kalld), and the flag of the Hittite winged sun to the flag of the Medes emperor or Parrok i Sherwani. Sherwaan with the Sun of the East, which is the guardian of the warrior lion.

The lion in the ancient Kurdish Mithraic religion was called the soldier of God. The lion was a friend of Khdrsha(Elijah) and sat on the ship with him and accompanied him throughout the seven days of the great storm.

Kalld, which was written to the god Kaldi in the history of Kurdistan and has been mentioned in the Kelashin inscription, is a rooster. He was popular with Khdrsha. Because he loved his wife(chicken) and did not get on the ship until she got on the ship. He has also been called Khoruj because he sang of the joy of sunrise on the winter's first day.

He was the Ized of war and courage and the sun in rising means the land of the East, that is, what was called Kashpi, Eli pi, Elimi, and Eli Maid. In the Kurdish language and in the dialect that I speak, we call it the Meila, it means the incomplete sun that is rising on the horizon. So all of this is the famous Maad word that is called "Mede" in English and their empire in the seventh century BC is called the Medes Empire. Of course, the kingdom of Mitanni is also famous based on the name of Mitt, which is the same as Maid and Pat and Pit meaning East.

Therefore, in all ancient texts, where the East is, it means the Medes land or modern Kurdistan.

All of this is from the past, but in the modern era, in the twentieth century, when Kurdish political issues and feelings of independence became pervasive and global, on September 15th. 1942, a cultural organization called "J.K" started operating in Kurdistan-Iran.

J.K was established with the aim of reviving the cultural-national rituals of the Kurds.

J.k later became a political party called the Kurdistan Democratic Party and declared the Autonomous Republic of Kurdistan in February 1946.

Representatives of the Kurds from Syria, Turkey, and Iraq were present in Mahabad on the day of the declaration of the republic, and Mustafa Barzani was there with ten thousand fighters from Kurdistan-Iraq.

On February 21, 1946, the national flag of Kurdistan was raised, and eleven months later, on December 17, 1946 it was brought down because the Iranian army invaded Kurdistan with innumerable forces. The Kurdistan cabinet was forced to leave the conflict to avoid Kurdish people being killed by Iranian soldiers. The Iranians were greatly humiliated cooperating with Hitler's Nazis before 1941 and the occupation of Iran after the surrender of Iran's Shah to Russia and Britain. By offering Caspian oil to Stalin, they were allowed to attack northwestern Iran: Azerbaijan, and Kurdistan.

The Iranian Turks had no national tendencies at all, they were farming religious people who had no knowledge of Turkish nationalism, and their brothers in the Soviet Union had cultural activities as Soviet citizens, such as Armenians, Kurds, Georgians, and others.

And the Communist Republic of Azerbaijan in Tabriz was never national and popular with the religious and Shiite people there. Therefore, with the arrival of the Iranian army in the region, the people of Tabriz felt empowered and overthrew the Republic of Tabriz. But the Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad was a democratic, non-communist state and very close to the standards of the free world. The people of Kurdistan prepared for war with the Iranians, but President Ghazi Mihamad, an educated, well-educated man and judge, called on the people to get out of the war idea.

He told the people that the Iranians were very angry and humiliated by the occupation of Iran by the Soviet and the United Kingdom and the surrender of their king, and now they had come to avenge their humiliation on the people of Kurdistan.

He gave the flag of Kurdistan to General Barzani, wrote his testament, went to Mianduaw, and negotiated with the Iranian commander. The Iranian commander treated her with respect, but three days later the Shah of Iran ordered her arrest and four months later issued an execute order him.

Ten days later, the King went to Kurdistan and met with Minaa Khanm, the wife of Qaazi Mihamad, and told her, "I apologize. The big governments asked me to execute Qazi Muhammad! because the Republic of Kurdistan is against their interests.

In any case, those days went down in history, but the same flag is now reverently kept in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan-Iraq. But the Shah of Iran and his flag are now unofficial in Iran because he was overthrown by Muslim radicals. Justice is about respecting the rights of others, not humiliating them. The king of Iran perhaps ruled over the wills, not the hearts. But President Qazi Mihamad ruled over hearts, not wills. Therefore, he sacrificed his life for the people of Kurdistan and was proudly executed.

By the order of the Kurdistan-Iraq Parliament, today is named as the day of the national flag of Kurdistan. Congratulations to all Kurds around the world on this great day, and I ask the Almighty God to keep this beautiful historical flag high.

I wish my dear friend Marc happiness and success. He is an amazing artist cartoonist. What a lucky nation that has an artist like Marc Chalvin.
