Interview

Portuguese-Brazilian Photographer Wanderson Alves

By Azad Karimi

These days we are in touch together by telephone... He goes to take photo and sometimes sends me pictures that thinks are more interesting.

Wanderson is a wonderful artist. I cannot say more about him because I believe that this will probably cast doubt about him and others will think that I am exaggerating.

So, it would be nice that I deliver the interview to my readers. Excuse me! I can’t keep my tongue without saying this sentence that He is a philosopher-photographer.

He interprets the world through the lens of his camera's atmospheric truth.

Thank you!

Vestland-Norway

1-Please present yourself (Name, education, job, Civil status and...) Name:

.Wanderson Cardoso Alves Place of Birth: Brazil: Minas São Paulo Birth Date: December: 13th, 1979 Education: degree in Contemporary Philosophy Civil Status: Single Job: photographer

2 - What is your artistic specialize?

 .Photography

3 - When and how did you become interested in this field of art?

.I became interested in this artistic field, right from adolescence when, around 14 years old, I had my first camera, which became my best and most faithful friend and companion and then another and another and so on, and on, and on....

4 - Who was your motivator?

.It was not exactly a person, but an enormous curiosity about the image and its concepts, in discovering that world full of fascinating references and, with it, the desire to learn, to evolve, and to be able to observe and show the simple details of the world, of life.

5 - What was your parent’s reaction?

.Since I had, from an early age, to be autonomous and even be geographically distant from my family, my options were always an object of curiosity and interest, as they were always seen as something new and different from family traditions until that moment.

6- When started you such as a professional artist, photographer?

.A major milestone in my artistic career was, no doubt, the Artistic Residency and the exhibition held in 2014 at the Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Art (PHICA)! Since then my conception of how to make art and its scope, became broader and more mature. Living in Portugal, since 2017, was also of great importance for consolidating my career in the arts, because since then I have had the opportunity to develop and show my work in great spaces and institutions.

7- Are you thankful and happy because of your activities as a photographer?

.Without a doubt, photography is what I like to do the most and what most accomplished me both professionally and personally.

8- How you see the view, the future of art, photography, culture? You are an artist; you should have an opinion...

.I sincerely believes that our view of the future must always take into account the present and the knowledge of the past. Each time was, in its own way, a time of change, of the passage from old to new habits, tastes and perspectives, without the human sensibility ceasing to be touched in the same or different ways over the centuries. For this very reason, I believe that, regardless of rapid or slow changes that may exist, as long as human beings maintain their ability to think, create and appreciate, there will always be an artistic motivation, both for photography in particular and for art in general, and this conviction always reminds me of the greatest Portuguese-speaking writer ever, who in the 16th century was already facing challenging times of change, he said in one of his sonnets: Times change, the will of men change, The being changes, trust changes: Everyone and everything are made up of change, Always taking on new qualities. ...... .. And if this was true five hundred years ago, and it has been until now, I am convinced that it will be in the future, as long as humanity maintains its essence.

9- Can you become one part of the artistic-cultural movement for motivation in youth or new generation in your country and so than?

.Yes of course! I have also collaborated with educational institutions, giving lectures on the concept of image linking philosophy and photography and promoting explained visits to young people to my exhibitions.

10- How can you help our world become a better place to live?

.I strongly believe in the strength of the example and I try to be a good citizen in my daily life. I also believe that spreading knowledge and teaching has a fundamental role in improving the world, because only with educated and informed people we can get a fairer, more dignified and more sustainable world. Photography is my greatest ally in this cause.

11- Have you more word to say or suggestion for our readers?

.Maybe leave an alert. It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, however, in today's times when everyone can be a photographer at any time and when everyone can share images at the speed of light, it is good to remember that if images can be instruments of correct information, they can also be true weapons of mystification, falsehood and manipulation. For this perversion to happen, it is enough to use technical knowledge without the necessary good faith, or even with a negative intentionality. Not everything that seems to be one way is what it really is.
