I believe the future of the music art and culture will be more and more integrated. Music is unlimited, no matter the nations, ages, genders, cultures, you might not understand the languages, but you do understand the music.

Qi Wang Interview

Questions:

Please present yourself: (Name, education, Civil status and...)

My name is Qi Wang, I am ph.d in mathematical modeling. I am from China and resident in Denmark, Copenhagen. I have 2 kids, a big girl and a small boy. I am 168 cm tall, and weight … in progress to lose weight …

What is your artistic specialize?

I am a pianist with the certificate of Chinese National Assessment for Music Professionals Piano Level 9 Grade A. However I am a freelance musician, since I don’t work with a musical career. Actually I am a musical volunteer for charity initiatives. I generally play concerts for nursing centers and teach children piano at Red Cross. Here is the link for a short film of my concerts review:

When and how did you become interested in this field of art?

Once upon a time, when I was in middle school, our city hall built a children culture center, and selected some students to train artistical skills. There were many subjects, musical instruments, opera, painting, ballet, etc. Our professional teachers continued observing us, to ensure every student learned the most suitable subject. At the beginning I sang in the choir, later I was assigned to learn piano.

Who was your motivator?

My motivator is the college entrance examination. Chinese students have great pressure to entrance the colleges. We have a big population, but limited education resources. If one has a high level specialty in arts or sports, some extra points would be added onto the final exam score. I was not bad in study, but still not the top students. I managed to go to a good university by adding the extra points for my piano professional.

What was your parent’s reaction?

My mom said, it would be hard to live on music, you need to learn something, which is easier to find a good job. I thought she was wise, so I changed to learn mathematical modeling and found a job at bank.

Are you thankful and happy because of your activities as a musician?

Life is not easy. I have experienced many positive things and also many negative things from time to time. When I am happy, it is a pleasure for me to deliver my cheerful to others by performing music. Happy plus happy is bigger than double happies. To produce happiness is our contribution to the society as a musician. When I am unhappy, it is a comfort for me to perform music for others. I received attention and encouragement from the audience. They make me feel that my life is meaningful.

What is music culture? What is music logic?

Personally I think the music culture is, to move people by music. Many times, I played a happy melody, after that I found some audience were crying. The audience was moved, although obviously we did have different understandings about the same melody. There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. People are moved by music, that is enough, no matter what they are imaging individually.

Music logic? I think that is math. Simply speaking, a melody need the correct chords to match, which is a kind of mathematical logic. Many famous mathematicians were good at music. The great Beethoven was also a mathematical genius. Some researchers have studied the correlation between Beethoven’s music and math.

Why do some songs become immortal?

I think a song become immortal,  because it created the spiritual resonance with most of people. The composers expressed their thinking about life, their worldviews, their real emotions in the musical creations. These creations have the ability to touch the audience soul and move their heart.

How you see the Music, Orchestration, art and culture in your perspective? I mean your prediction for the future of music!

I believe the future of the music art and culture will be more and more integrated. Music is unlimited, no matter the nations, ages, genders, cultures, you might not understand the languages, but you do understand the music. People need more understanding and support, people don’t need suspicion and conflict. Music is a perfect media for international connections.

Can you become one part of the cultural movement for motivation in youth or new generation in your country and so than?

Absolutely I continue doing volunteer work for kids cultural movement. In Red Cross Copenhagen, we hold music summer camp every year to teach kids music for free. Children all like music, however not every child has the resource to learn music. We offer a free and equal platform for kids to have a try. Due to coronavirus, many children can not join our lessons in person. So I recorded piano tutorials for kids and uploaded on my YouTube Channel. Following the tutorials children can learn and practice piano at home, just like playing music together with me. These tutorials are also a teaching reference for other volunteer teachers. How can you help our world become a better place to live?

I am a normal person, I don’t have the huge ability to help the world better. I just do something I can, to make the life around me a bit better. Due to coronavirus Denmark had lockdown for about two months. During the time isolated at home, I feel depressed. I need music to keep positive and inner peace. So I decided to learn and record a new melody every week until the lockdown was over. I received many greetings from YouTube, and many subscribers shared their isolation stories with me. They were the listeners of my music, I was the listener of their stories. We helped each other overcome the loneliness feeling under the quarantine.
